The Merchant Taylors’ and Skinners’ Livery Companies alternate each year in the order of precedence as number 6 and 7 among the Great Twelve, hence “sixes and sevens”.
The Merchant Taylors' Great Hall dates back to the 14th century and with its 13-metre high ceiling and 3-metre high windows the room has a fabulous sense of space and occasion. Despite the destruction wrought by the Great Fire of 1666 and the bombing of WW2, certain parts of the original Hall remain and the rest has been magnificently restored to its former glory.
It is in these lovely surroundings that The Master will welcome you to his final black-tie Livery Hall dinner. We will enjoy a sparkling reception followed by a splendid three-course dinner with wine. The evening will conclude with port, toasts and speeches. The Master’s speaker will be Peter Nelson, former Deputy Town Clerk at the City of London Corporation, whose speeches at elections in the Great Hall were renowned for their humour and warmth. The Master has asked him to speak on his experiences at Guildhall and in Local Government more generally.
This event follows our welcoming ceremony for new members, who may wish to continue their celebrations by attending this lovely dinner.
